The AED Training course is suitable of all companies, small business, shopping and leisure centres who have a AED machine on their premises or individuals who wish to expand their first aid knowledge.

Course Aim

The aim of the qualification is to enable Learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with the use of an Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe use of the AED in emergency situations.



This course has been designed to last 3 hours with as much hands on as possible.

Course Content
  • The course covers the following:
  • Recap of personal safety
  • Assessing the incident and patient
  • DRABC check and sending for help
  • Defibrillation (recognition of heart rhythms)
  • CPR and use of AED on a casualty
  • General guidelines for using a defibrillator
  • Recording of information (sample report form)
  • Handover to the emergency services
Intended Audience

The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to use an AED when dealing with an emergency situation

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but in order to benefit from the learning, learners should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification.

Assessment and Certification

The AED Course is assessed via a practical and theory assessment. Successful delegates will receive an approved paediatric first aid certificate, which is valid for 3 years.

Requalification Requirements

The Level 2 Safe use of an AED Course is only valid for a period of 1 year, within which time the Learner will need to re-take the course and the assessment in order to remain qualified.

Whilst a first aider’s certificate has expired, that person will not be accepted as a workplace first aider under the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, so employers should be encouraged to requalify their first aiders early. You must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in this course and must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment.
