Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening, generalised or systemic hypersensitivity reaction. This is characterised by rapidly developing life-threatening airway and/or breathing and/or circulation problems usually associated with skin and mucosal changes, which requires immediate medical attention. With the number of sufferers increasing each year, it is extremely important to know what to do when faced with this acute emergency condition. The whole body is affected, often within minutes of exposure to the substance which causes the allergic reaction but sometimes after hours.

The Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis qualification forms part of our First Aid suite of qualifications. The content of this qualification has been approved by the Anaphylaxis Campaign and is based on the recommendations of:

  • Resuscitation Council (UK)
  • Skills for Health Assessment Principles for First Aid Qualifications

Basic Life Support and Management of AnaphylaxisIntended Audience 

  • This course is ideal as a GP/Dental surgery annual staff refresher, pharmacists and practice nurses.
  • For people who have a specific interest or a responsibility so they can provide basic life support (BLS) and manage anaphylaxis.
  • Healthcare providers who are expected to deal with an anaphylactic reaction.
  • Community support workers, care homes, nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, nominated first aiders in the work place.

This qualification should enable Learners to attain the knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of first aid situations including managing a casualty with anaphylaxis.

Entry Requirement

Learners must be at least 16 years old on the first day of training. There are no formal entry requirements but in order to benefit from the learning, you should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification.

Requalification Requirements

Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis certificate is valid for a period of 1 year, learner needs to re-take the qualification and the assessments before the end of the 1 year to remain qualified.
