CPR & AED Training Course


The CPR & AED course is suitable of all companies, small business, shopping and leisure centres who have a AED machine on their premises as well as anyone interested in furthering their emergency first aid skills. The course teaches the AED operator the essential skills required to know what to do in an emergency.

Aim of Qualification

The aim of the qualification is to enable Learners to attain the knowledge and competencies needed to deal with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective CPR and use of the AED in emergency situations.


The course consists of 6 hours contact teaching time. Usually run over one session although this is flexible to suit your needs. A maximum of 12 students are allowed and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above. Larger groups can be catered for, but the ratio must not exceed 12 students per instructor.

Course Content
  • Assess an incident and explain rationale for checking for danger
  • Demonstrate how to open an airway and check for breathing
  • Demonstrate how to deal with an unconscious casualty
  • Explain how to recognise a casualty who is not breathing normally
  • Demonstrate how to perform CPR on a non breathing casualty
  • Explain how the heart and defibrillation works
  • Describe how to check and maintain an AED machine
  • List the checks to be made before using an AED
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED with CPR when on own
  • Demonstrate the use of an AED with CPR in pairs
Intended Audience

The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide First Aid and/or use an AED when dealing with an emergency situation.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but in order to benefit from the learning, Learners should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification. It is also preferable if the Learner has recently attended a suitable First Aid course and gained a qualification such as the QA Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) or the QA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF) or equivalent.

Requalification Requirements

The Level 2 Award in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillation (QCF) is only valid for a period of 1 year, within which time the Learner will need to re-take the course and the assessment in order to remain qualified.

Whilst a first aider’s certificate has expired, that person will not be accepted as a workplace first aider under the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, so employers should be encouraged to requalify their first aiders early. You must be physically able to carry out the procedures detailed in this course and must attend all sessions to be eligible for assessment.
